Anthems, seem easy enough to write. Big choruses, guitars, loud vocals. That kinda thing. Simples.
Except they aren’t. If they were we’d all being doing it. Songs that make drunk middle aged men grab their mates and tell them they love them are few and far between nowadays. Noel probably wrote most of them anyway didn’t he. Liam’s even having a good go nowadays and a few others have had a stab at it. But let’s be honest it’s a dying art. It’s all space rock now. What about the Parka Monkeys, what they got?
Enter Joe Astley and his Anthem for the North. Obviously an easy song to write, right. Nope it’s just not true.
Coming on like a cross between She’s a Star by James and Don’t Look Back in Anger by Oh I dunno. This goes straight for the heart and your emotions. It shoots, it scores, it comes back and picks up a hat trick.
By the time the first chorus kicks in your already singing along, “Coz I got Northern Soul” I’m a Southerner but I totally get it. We all get it. By the end your belting it out like a pro. Not quite like Joe I must add, he’s got some serious chops on him and he makes the song soar.
If your not punching the air and dreaming of seeing this live then your a cold fish. By the end your already sorting out playing it again. I played it 3 times in a row when I first heard it. Yeah these anthems – easy. Piffle.
And what of Joe himself, well he looks like the son of Richard Hawley, all Eddie Cochran quiff and chiseled good looks. I hate him and love him all at the same time.
It won’t be long until we all love him though. We need stars like him. Go check it out, your not going to be disappointed.
