Bono once said “This is not a rebel song”
Well thankfully for Roy T’Shed he isn’t Bono and The Unlikely Lads from Bolton have written a Rebel song and with it channel their inner Public Enemy and The Clash and come out fighting with the first single from their second album.
I’m not sure that there is currently many band’s that so early into their career have spoken so directly and sung about social injustice and the working classes with such aplomb. Thinking about it I’m not aware of many that have throughout history – those artists that are not prepared to pull any punches or conform to the Modern Way of doing things. I’ll leave you to think of any and count on one hand!
However, this isn’t any normal band, these are men with experience from Thatcher’s years of shitting on working classes through to the empty promises of Blair’s new Labour, so they have channelled this into a formidable set of songs that as well as speaking to us, have wrapped it all up in a Roses/Mondays/Smith’s/Clash parcel and deliver it to us, to sing and love them even more for it.
OFITP is the next big step for The Sheds and it’s a monster of a tune, from the pounding Tom Toms, the Machine gun kick drum beats, the thumping bass and screaming guitars. Roy’s vocals layered over the top, as confident (in fact more confident) then ever before – this is a song and lyric that you can tell means a hell of a lot to him and the lads, and that transfers from them to us. They mean it man and we believe them.
As the UK continues to spiral more and more into a potential fascist police state, we need this band more then ever, we need more artists like this and its starting to happen. Those fed up with how society treats them, how they are even viewed within the music industry – overlooked for Nepo’s or just plain Cronyism at its worse, they are starting to be heard by the disenfranchised and angry public who want more then they are hearing from others.
Ignore this band at your peril.
OFITP is released on the 25th May and you can pre-save it here:
