Word has been sent to me here in Tanner Towers from the cold North East.
It says there has been a rumbling recently and these shy and retiring types, clad mostly in their black and white armour have returned from a quest into Europe with a new found purpose and reason to shout.
Cast free of their shackles, once held by the evil tyrant and fat shop keeper the self appointed Sheriff Ashley, many of them have picked up their guitars and sticks and decided to start making a racket and some of them are even very good so watch out coz The Toon are in Town.
That’s enough tenuous middle age/knights of the round table links, but if you’re going to call yourself The Avelons how else am I going to start a review of their music.
Forged in fire back in 2021, ok I’ll stop now, these 4 Geordie boys have steadily been making a name for themselves locally, with I’m reliable informed excellent live performances backed up with some impressive single releases to date. The Avelons are about to release their next single Chit Chat.
Bursting out of the speakers from the off, you’re immediately struck with how well produced and professional they sound. In a world dominated by Liam clones it’s refreshing to hear a band not trying to sound like him/Oasis. In fact they are quite distantly removed from that sound or indeed other favourite influence the Arctic Monkeys, theirs is a harder and faster punky sound wrapped in melody with excellent gritty vocals and guitar hooks driven on by pounding bass and drums. They have more in common with Nothing But Thieves or indeed the other New Rock bands on the scene Feverjaw and Brave Liasion. Which to these ears is very refreshing.
Being able to stand out in this congested music scene is a difficult thing to do, but by sounding something different to the norm may just be bands trump card.
If the chit chat in Toon is correct then these lads could well be the four horseman of the apocalypse ready to ride into town and save us from the mundane and samey. We can but wait and see, but on this singles showing I’d wager a pint of mead and some groats that they’ve got a fair chance indeed.
Go check it out. You won’t be disappointed. If not off with my head.
