After what seems like an age, finally 2025 gets in the swing and a load of great new releases are tickling my eardrums…
Here’s a brief review of my favourites.
SENSES – Accelerate Your Love/Already Part Of The Problem.
Coventry’s own Senses return with two new tracks and an announced second album making The Stone Roses look productive.
These tracks bode well for what’s to come, grown up Indie Guitar music that shows the lads pushing their sound into new territories akin to Doves and Ride. They still know how to write a tune full of hooks and good vibes. It’s great to have them back and this really could be their second coming….
Andy Johnson – Soul Storm
The every productive AJ returns also from a quiet spell (for him) with a Noel G type banger, sounding as good as he’s ever been. Full of warmth and psychedelic sounds it’s testament to his talent…also free if you subscribe to his Bandcamp page, highly recommended.
Amelia Coburn – Le Fabuleux Destin de Sandra
Keeping the (French)connection to AJ and the North East, the outrageously talented Amelia returns with a French sung ditty that is all Francois Hardy and cool coffee shops but with Amelia’s wonderful voice. Paul Weller’s favourite Folk artist clearly has no plans in slowing down, and fresh from performances at SXSW clearly the world is hers.
Scott Lavene – French Julie
Keeping it French, it’s Eastend Punk Poet Scott with another sublime slice of storytelling. With a guitar backing that’s akin to John Squire’s Something’s Burning it’s cooler than Serge Gainsbourg’s cigarettes. Essential listening.
The Molotovs – More More More
Yeah I’m on the ‘Tovs bandwagon…but do they sound as good as they look though?
Yeah actually I think so …Matt Molotov vocally has more in common with Tom from The Enemy then say Weller but it’s full of youth and attitude and as catchy as anything you’ve heard in for ages… Dust off your bowling shoes as Mod is back.
Cream Soda – Jump The Gun
Cream Soda with a fizzy New Wave bottle of pop that at 1 min 36 doesn’t leave a bitter taste or goes flat…Pogotastic.
Theatre Royal – Welsh Coastal Towns
Ending this Punky/Mod revival, the well established TR are also back this month with a fantastic earworm that harks back to 1979 and is great for it…lovely use of horns as well.
All songs available now and on my Rebirthofcool playlist…
Go check them out.
Till next time…
