From the Album: Wunderkammer
Futuristic Film Noir for the Modern Curator
Pocket Lint (Mark Heffernan) has always operated in the shadows of “futuristic film noir,” but with his latest single, “Cyanometer,” he is stepping into a more structured, architectural light.
The track serves as the first glimpse into the upcoming album Wunderkammer, which Mark has been meticulously crafting since October 2024. Inspired by the 16th-century “cabinets of curiosities,” Heffernan uses his bedroom-studio setup to craft sonic vignettes that feel like physical objects you can turn over in your hand.
Where his previous work felt like a sprawling, “trippy” journey, “Cyanometer” is more contained and precise—blending the dark, romantic tension of Shelley and Coleridge with the electronic pulse of early 80s Sheffield.
There is a tactile quality here that likely stems from Heffernan’s own hands-on artistry—this is a musician who spent weeks sanding amethyst into cameos before turning to the synthesizer. That same patience and attention to texture are present in the layering of “Cyanometer.” The synths are lush and sweeping, yet they are underpinned by a cold, mechanical drive that keeps the track firmly rooted in an urban, neon-lit landscape.
The true surprise of the track is a guitar solo that arrives like a sudden burst of light in a dark room. It is quite simply sublime—echoing the soaring, melodic complexity of Mansun at their peak. It provides a human, emotive counterpoint to the track’s “Blade Runner” synths, bridging the gap between the mechanical and the organic. It’s an “exhibit” within his curiosity cabinet that demands repeat listens.
“Cyanometer” is a hauntingly beautiful entry into the Pocket Lint catalog. It is a track for the thinkers and the nocturnal wanderers. It manages to be intellectual without being cold, and nostalgic without being a caricature.
